DESIGNING WITH CLARITY
Marc Rosen

"Packaging is a word that no longer just refers to a box," says Marc Rosen, revealing a hint of the design philosophy that has earned him seven FiFi awards for his fragrance bottle designs.

Rosen clearly takes an out-of-the-box approach in Designing with clarity, a collaboration of design, materials and manufacturing that provides cosmetics companies a new, dynamic model for innovation.

Rosen teamed with Eastman and three molders - Alcan Packaging, C+N Packaging, and Leidel Corporation in cooperation with CPP Global - to showcase the potential of The Glass Polymer™ family of cosmetic materials and to inspire a 'new age' of skin care jar design - one in which the packaging engages the consumer as much as the product inside.

"Our responsibility as designers is to create a package that's going to extol the product it's holding," explains Rosen. "The package is silent salesman. And The Glass Polymer™ gives us the opportunity to show that, just like in fragrance, skin care jars can create the brand."

Testing the limits even on paper, Rosen presented a variety of sketches to the molders. "The designs were challenging," he admits, "but I didn't design anything that couldn't be done."

Each molder adopted a different design and worked closely with Eastman to create tooling for Eastar™ copolyester CN005 - the latest addition to The Glass Polymer™ family, and the first developed specifically for cosmetics packaging industry.

The result: five enchanting "inspirational notions" that are attracting a lot of attention and showing the way for further innovation in the beauty industry.
